  Untitled 2

New Delhi: India is likely to become top rice exporter of the world this year and Thailand is in danger of losing the first spot first time since 1983.

Thai export prices went up to uncompetitive levels because of government intervention scheme.

India, which resumed exports in September 2011, could take over the No.1 spot from Thailand this year, forecasts from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggest.

India’s global rice exports could top 10 million tonnes in the fiscal year ending next March, while rice exports from Pakistan are expected to grow to 3.7 million tonnes in the fiscal year, compared to 3.4 million tonnes exported in 2011, Reuters reported.

Forecasts show Pakistan will retain its spot as the world’s fourth biggest rice exporter.
