Have not put or contemplating import curbs on Malaysia, Turkey: Piyush Goyal

Subject: Have not put or contemplating import curbs on Malaysia, Turkey: Piyush Goyal
NEW DELHI: Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that neither has India imposed nor is contemplating any curbs on imports from Malaysia or Turkey as it believes in fair play and equal terms for all trading partners and if curbs are imposed, they apply to all countries.

“I don’t think we have put any curbs on imports from Malaysia neither are we contemplating that. Nor have we put any curbs on Turkey nor are we contemplating that. India believes in fair play and equal treatment to all,” Goyal said during a panel discussion at the Raisina Dialogue here.

The government last week restricted the imports of refined palm oil and refined palmolein in a move that would limit these products coming from Malaysia, the largest source of refined palm oil and its fractions to the country. As per industry insiders, the move was in retaliation to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad criticising New Delhi’s abrogation of J&K's special status and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

“Any curbs that we put in in the best interests of India’s trade and international trade, apply to all countries uniformly and if some of the restrictions impact Malaysia, I don’t think that would be the only country that is impacted. There would be other exporters to India who would have the same impact,” Goyal said.

He also said that India is in dialogue with EU and the US to sort out pressing trade issues and further expand engagement with them.

On the issue of the import of goods in the ‘others’ category, he clarified that one out of four items valued at $130 billion are in the ‘others’ category. Right classification of these imports under HSN code will only lead to greater transparency and establish fair trading practices and make India a fair place to do business and trade and also provide equal opportunity to all.
